Mahakumbh 2025: Over 1 Crore Devotees Take Holy Dip at Sangam on Day 1

Kumbh Mela 2025

Prayagraj, January 14 — The first day of Mahakumbh 2025 witnessed an unprecedented turnout as over 1 crore devotees gathered at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj. Marking the start of this spiritually significant event, pilgrims braved the winter chill to take a holy dip in the Sangam, believing it to cleanse their sins and pave the way for salvation.

The sprawling event, touted as the largest congregation of humanity on Earth, began on an auspicious note with prayers and rituals performed by saints, seers, and scholars from across India. The Makar Sankranti festival added to the fervor as devotees arrived in droves, chanting hymns and performing pujas along the riverbanks.

The Uttar Pradesh government, in collaboration with local authorities, ensured elaborate arrangements for the safety, security, and comfort of the pilgrims. Over 30,000 police personnel, drones, and CCTV cameras were deployed to maintain law and order. The temporary township sprawled across 4,000 hectares featured thousands of tents, over 35,000 bio-toilets, and dedicated medical and rescue teams.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the event with a traditional aarti at the Sangam. Speaking to the media, he said, “Mahakumbh 2025 is a reflection of India’s spiritual heritage and cultural unity. We are committed to ensuring a safe and enriching experience for every pilgrim.”

The day also saw the first Shahi Snan (royal bath), where over a dozen akharas (monastic orders) of sadhus and saints, clad in saffron robes and adorned with ash and rudraksha beads, entered the waters in grand processions.

Devotees shared their experiences, expressing a deep sense of spiritual fulfillment. “This is not just a ritual; it is a way to connect with our roots and seek divine blessings,” said a pilgrim from Maharashtra.

With over 10 crore pilgrims expected to attend throughout the 55-day event, Mahakumbh 2025 is poised to set new records. The administration has urged attendees to follow safety protocols and cooperate with authorities to ensure the smooth functioning of the event.

As the first day concluded with mesmerizing evening aartis and cultural programs, the spiritual energy at Mahakumbh 2025 was palpable, reaffirming the timeless tradition of devotion and unity.
