Daman and Diu are two places located in the western part of India, which became a Union Territory in 1987. This coastal paradise comprises two distinct regions: Daman is a piece of mainland and Diu is an island off Kathiawar of Gujarat.
Daman is famous for the beach, forts and building which are the remnants of Portuguese rule on Indian soil. Moti Daman Fort is a fine 16th century fort which is testimony of the past of the area. Devka and Jampore beaches remain some of the oldest beaches that are naturally endowed with white sand beaches and crystal clear water that is appropriate for leisurely sun basking and water sports.
Diu is a lovely island town that is not exactly rushed off its feet. The Diu fort is one of the major landmarks, is a colossal structure including an impressive dominating structure of Arabian Sea. The Rock Caves of Naida; there some natural caves that are said to have been used by ancient people in Marmaris. The two most important beaches, Ghoghla and Nagoa, on the island are perfect for swimming, sun bath and water sports.
Daman and Diu are two places which are endowed with historical and cultural flavor along with the beauty of nature. This union territory has beautiful and quiet beaches, historic forts, and delightful Hispanic styled buildings, it is still unknown on the tourist map. Little union territories of India, Daman and Diu consist of cultural diversity and familiarizing it through the traditional costume. Traditional Dress for Women
- Saree: Saree is the most familiar traditional dress used by the women of Daman and Diu. This is a piece of cloth that is long, unwoven and is worn wrapping over the body in different fashion. Kanjeevaram silk, pure cotton and chiffon sarees with embroidery and zari works are worn commonly by women.
- Ghagra Choli: This is Daman and diu traditional dress which includes a long skirt (ghagra) , a blouse (choli) and a scarf (dupatta). The ghagra is most often bright in terms of color and can be decorated with embroidery, mirrors or sequences.
- Salwar Kameez: This is much more comfortable and convenient for everyday repoling, as well as for the dancing itself. It comprises of baggy trousers (salwar) and a long shirt (kameez.) Elegant salwar kameez which women wear can be made of cotton or linen and may contain simple or rich embroidered clock.
Traditional Dress for Men
- Dhoti Kurta: This is one of the oldest types of dress worn by the males in Daman and Diu. It involves the wearing of an unstitched piece of cloth, the lower body draping dhoti, and an unstitched shirt, the kurta. Dhoti kurta style is quite popular and common among the men opting for formal or semi formal wear and The dress is usually made of cotton or linen and may also have simple or rich embroidered forms.
- Sherwani: This is Daman and diu traditional dress worn by men occasion being special events such as wedding events. It is a kind of dress which is long, tight worn from the waist down to the ankles, with long sleeves and a turn-down collar. Sherwanis are usually formed out of silk or sometimes velvet and are usually adorned with embroidery and application.
Modern Influence
Over the last few years, Daman and Diu traditional dress code of the people has been increasingly dominated with fashion from the western world. Female goes naked with jeans, tops and dress while male wears shirt, trousers and t-shirts. Nevertheless, people still wear traditional clothing on centrally important days and celebrations.
